Mental Health in College/University

Hello everyone!


Today's post is all about taking care of your mental health throughout college/university. It's around that time of year where everyone is busy with final projects and exams, and the semester just doesn't seem to end! It's important to take of yourself both physically and mentally all the time, but especially now.


Let's discuss, shall we?

 

I am a college sophomore (second year), however, this is my first real college semester. I had taken college credit classes in high school, so I'm a little farther ahead than others my age.


College/University is a time to learn, obviously. It's a time to learn academically, but also a time to learn about yourself. Self-doubt creeps in, and you're unsure of every decision you're making. It can feel frustrating and takes a heavy toll on your mental wellness. Sound familiar?


I want to state that just because you're not sure about your major, or field of study, or anything really, doesn't mean you are not good enough. I have had these feelings a lot lately, and I just want to remind all of you (and myself), that's it's okay to be unsure. We're all still growing. Your time will come, trust me.


Self-care isn't just about face masks and watching Netflix. It's much more than that. You have to be at peace with your mind, which can take a lot of energy and be very difficult. It's important to exercise your mind, just as it's important to exercise your body. Journaling can help, even if you feel like you're not a writer. A lot of time, journaling can bring out thoughts you didn't even know you were thinking. This can help you better understand yourself.


Along with self-care, connect with people you trust. Tell them you love them, even if it's awkward. You'll feel loved right back. If there are people in your life that are making the bad thoughts worse in your head, ignore them. Don't worry about their judgment or disapproval, you'll prove them wrong. It's hard, but the best realization I've ever had was that I don't need anyone else's permission to do what I want and live how I'd like.


During this stressful time, take advantage of the counseling programs that should be available on campus. This is more often than not free, and they have confidentiality policies, in case you're worried about others finding out, although there's nothing wrong with seeing a professional. (Side note: Everything's confidential unless you are a danger to yourself, others, are there is harm being done to you. They just want what's best for everyone's safety, including yours.)


Everyone's different, and I'm not saying I know what's best for you. All I want to say is, don't be afraid to ask for help. You're definitely not alone, and you don't have to feel like your pain isn't valid. College is hard enough, there's no reason you should deal with the hurt alone.


If prayer helps, then pray. If music helps, then listen to your favorite songs. However, don't be afraid to take action. Ignoring the pain away won't help, and it's important to take care of your mental well-being. You wouldn't ignore a broken arm, so why ignore broken hearts and hurtful thoughts?
